More about this route
Pierre Loti Hill
The hill above the Golden Horn in Eyüpsultan was first named after a well-known historian who lived there in Ottoman times. Its present name comes from the French writer Pierre Loti, who arrived in Istanbul in 1876, smoked his water pipe in a café here while looking out over the Golden Horn, and spread friendship for Turkey around the world through his novels.
Balat and Fener
With buildings from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Fener is one of the oldest settled parts of Istanbul. It takes its name from the lighthouse that stood here in Byzantine times, and it became a largely Greek district after the conquest of Istanbul. From the 16th century the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate moved here, making it a centre for Orthodox Christians of the district and of the world.
İstiklal Street
Known for its shops, restaurants, cafés, cinemas, theatres and bookshops. It is the cultural street of the city.
